Not That is a restaurant-decision app made by Niche Applications, LLC ("we", "us"), available on the App Store, Google Play, and the web. This policy describes what information the app handles and why. Questions: hello@nicheapps.co.
Account information. By default the app signs you in anonymously — a random identifier with no name or email attached. If you choose to sign in (Sign in with Apple on iOS; Apple or Google on the web), we receive your name, email address, and profile photo from the provider you pick. We use these only to label your account in the app and to sync your data across devices. Sign in with Apple lets you hide your real email address; that works fine with Not That.
Location. With your permission, the app uses your device's location while you're using it, for one purpose: finding restaurants near you. Your coordinates are sent through our servers to Google's Places API to run the search. If you deny location permission, you can type a location instead; that text is sent to our servers to convert to coordinates, with the same handling. Results near frequently searched areas are cached so the app stays fast and affordable; cache entries expire automatically. That cache is organized by geographic area, not by person — we do not keep a log of your locations or build a profile of where you go.
Content you create. Favorites, blocked restaurants, winner history, and filter presets are stored on your device. If you sign in, they're also stored in a per-user record in our database (Google Firebase) so they sync across your devices.
Multiplayer sessions. When you start or join a group session, the session code, participants' votes, and round state are held in a temporary shared record so everyone's screens stay in sync. Your display name and votes are visible to the other people in your session. Sessions are short-lived and aren't used for anything beyond running the round.
Anonymous usage analytics. We collect a small set of anonymous usage events (for example: app opened, a battle started, a winner reached, a favorite added) through PostHog to understand which features are used and where people drop off. These events carry a random identifier that is not connected to your name, email, account, or location — we never link analytics to who you are, we don't record your screen or taps beyond these named events, and we don't use analytics for advertising.
Diagnostics. The app keeps a small error log and API-usage counters on your device to help with troubleshooting; you can view and clear them in Settings, and they aren't transmitted to us. Our servers keep standard request logs (your account identifier, timestamps, endpoint called) used for rate limiting, abuse prevention, and debugging.
We do not sell personal information, use it for advertising, or share it with data brokers.
Not That is built on the following services, which process data on our behalf:
Synced data is kept while your account exists. Signing out does not delete your cloud data — deleting your account does. You can delete your account and all synced data at any time:
Local data (favorites, blocked list, history) can also be cleared anytime via Settings → Clear All Data. Server request logs are retained briefly for security and debugging, then deleted.
Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS). Database access is restricted so that your synced record is readable only by your authenticated account, and internal restaurant caches aren't directly readable by clients. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we collect so there's little to lose.
Not That is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Depending on where you live (e.g., EU/EEA, UK, California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, and to object to certain processing. Most of these you can exercise directly in the app (view your data in Settings, delete your account). For anything else, email hello@nicheapps.co and we'll respond within 30 days. We don't discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
If we make material changes — for example, linking analytics to accounts, which we don't do today — we'll update this page and the effective date above, and note the change in the app's release notes.
